A Dutch fresh flower and produce market in the Netherlands

Come to the Netherlands in spring and the tulips certainly know how to put on a show. But ask us what makes a Netherlands bike tour truly memorable, and we'd tell you not to stop at the flowers.

This is a country that's wonderfully easy to experience from the saddle. One moment you're following a bike path beside a canal, and the next you're rolling into a centuries-old town, passing a windmill or swapping your bike shoes for walking shoes to explore a local market. And then, of course, there's the cheese.

On our Netherlands bike tours, those cultural encounters are woven naturally into the journey. Some are organized experiences, while others are simply part of riding through a country where cycling, food, water and community have shaped everyday life for generations.

Here are a few of the moments you can look forward to.

Experience a Country Where Bicycles Are Part of Everyday Life

Cyclists using bike paths in Amsterdam, Holland

If you want to understand Dutch culture, riding a bicycle is a pretty good place to start.

Cycling here doesn't feel like an attraction created for visitors. It is woven into daily life. You'll see people heading to work, school and the shops by bike, often using the same network of paths you're following on tour.

And once you're out of the bigger cities, you quickly discover how closely Dutch cycling is connected to the landscape.

On our 8-Day Netherlands Tulips Bike & Barge Spring Tour, for example, you ride through the “Green Heart” of Holland, alongside rivers and canals, across polders and into historic towns including Haarlem, Leiden, Gouda and De Rijp. The itinerary also takes you through Amsterdam by barge, giving you another perspective on a country shaped by its waterways.

Our 7-Day Netherlands Tulips & Windmills Bike Tour heads farther into northern Holland. You'll cycle on dikes and past canals, wooden drawbridges, former seafaring towns and land reclaimed from the sea.

These are often our favorite kinds of moments because we don't really need to say, “Now you're experiencing Dutch culture.” You're already riding right through it.

Taste Your Way Through Dutch Cheese Country

Now, let's talk cheese.

If you're expecting Gouda, you won't be disappointed. But there's much more to Dutch cheese culture than recognizing the name on a supermarket package back home.

Our Bike & Barge tour gives you a particularly delicious introduction. En route from Leiden to Gouda, the itinerary includes a stop at a cheese farm near Zoeterwoude. You'll learn more about how the cheese is made and, importantly, get a chance to taste the results.

Then you arrive in Gouda itself. The city's historic center gives some context to the cheese that bears its name. There's time the following morning to explore, including the opportunity to see the market square and its historic cheese weigh house.

Later in the journey, you'll reach another city with deep cheese traditions: Alkmaar. This brings you into its Old Town, with 17th-century buildings and winding canals, and leaves dinner that evening open for you to choose your own restaurant.

Our guide-style advice? When you have free time, resist the temptation to rush through it. Find a café or cheese shop and ask what's local.

And keep an eye out for other Dutch specialties along the way. Depending on what's available, you might encounter stroopwafels, thin waffle cookies sandwiched around syrup; poffertjes, small fluffy pancakes; bitterballen, a classic savory snack; or appeltaart, Dutch apple pie that's particularly welcome after a day on the bike.

Discover Windmills, Waterways and Centuries of Dutch Ingenuity

Windmills along a canal in the Netherlands

A Dutch windmill makes a lovely photograph. But once you have cycled through this landscape, you begin to appreciate that windmills, canals, and dikes tell a much bigger story.

On the Bike & Barge tour, you'll visit Zaanse Schans, where historic houses and working windmills bring traditional industries to life. The site's windmills have been used for jobs including grinding mustard and spices, producing oil and sawing timber. There is also a clog maker, old-fashioned grocery store, and cheese farm within the village.

There's another fascinating encounter on the ride back toward Amsterdam, when the tour visits the Schermerhorn Windmill Museum in the former Schermer Polder windmill complex.

The 7-Day Netherlands Tulips & Windmills tour approaches this story from another direction. You'll start one day in De Rijp, a village with a whaling past that was once connected to the sea. You'll then cycle past windmills and over canals and wooden drawbridges as you travel toward historic Hoorn and Enkhuizen.

It's one of those days when your tour leader may find themselves answering almost as many questions about water as bicycles. How did the Dutch reclaim this land? What's a polder? Why are the dikes here? By bike, suddenly those answers aren't abstract. You're riding across the landscape they created.

Slow Down for Dutch Towns, Traditions and Gezelligheid

There's no neat one-word English translation. Think warmth, conviviality and the pleasure of being comfortably together. It's a Dutch feeling of comfort, connection and belonging found in cafés, villages and cheese farms.

And a bike tour gives you plenty of opportunities to find your own version of it.

Walks after dinner on the bike and barge tour take you into the centers of Haarlem, Leiden and Gouda. Rather than simply arriving at a hotel and moving on the next morning, you've got the chance to see these historic communities at walking pace too.

The Tulips & Windmills bike tour goes even deeper into some of the country's distinctive regional traditions. In Enkhuizen, you'll explore an open-air museum built with historical buildings from around the Netherlands, and interpreters dressed to represent life in earlier centuries.

Cycle through Giethoorn, where canals, thatched houses and small arched bridges create a completely different village landscape. Later, visit the Lokkerij stork conservation project and the craft village of Orvelte.

There are prehistoric stories too, including passing through heathland dotted with ancient stone beds. Put those experiences together and this becomes much more than a spring flower tour. You're getting a window into how people have lived with this landscape for centuries.

Make Room for the Dutch Food You'll Want to Try

The famous Dutch treat, the Stroopwafel: Two thin waffles with a syrupy filling

One of our unofficial rules of bicycle touring is simple: leave some room for snacks.

The Netherlands makes that particularly easy.

Pausing for meals and café stops are opportunities to explore - your guide can give local tips on the best places to visit! On these explorations you might find:

Stroopwafels: Two thin waffles with a syrupy filling.

Poffertjes: Small, light pancakes traditionally served warm.

Appeltaart: Dutch-style apple pie, an excellent café stop with coffee.

Bitterballen: Crisp, savory bites familiar on Dutch café menus.

Dutch fries: Often served with a choice of sauces.

Local cheeses: Look beyond Gouda and ask what is produced in the region you are visiting.

You'll find on your Netherlands bike tour that food becomes more than food. After you've spent a day cycling together, getting slightly distracted by tulip fields, hearing stories from your guides and discovering places you probably wouldn't have found on your own, dinner is where everyone gets to swap stories. That's gezelligheid, too.

A Taste of the Netherlands, One Pedal Stroke at a Time

Yes, come for those spectacular spring tulips.

But don't be surprised if you return home talking just as enthusiastically about a tiny Dutch village, a slice of cheese at a farm, centuries-old windmills, a canal-side café or the evening you sat around the dinner table laughing with people who had been strangers just a few days before.

Both tours use cycling to get you closer to the Netherlands rather than simply moving you through it.

You'll love our 8-Day Netherlands Tulips Bike & Barge Spring Tour if the idea of unpacking once, cruising between destinations and combining cycling with experiences such as a cheese-farm tasting, Gouda, Zaanse Schans and historic windmills appeals to you. The barge serves as your floating home throughout the trip.

Or take a look at our 7-Day Netherlands Tulips & Windmills Captivating Bike Tour if you'd like an inn-to-inn journey that reaches farther into northern Holland, with historic towns, Giethoorn, traditional villages, and cultural visits along the way.

Either way, bring your curiosity. We'll take care of the route.
