Ride Spain’s legendary Camino de Santiago

For many cyclists, the Camino de Santiago is a lifelong dream — and 2027 is a Holy Year, making this a truly special time to make the journey. On this 7-day Spain bike tour, you experience the Camino in a way that feels both meaningful and wonderfully freeing, riding at your own pace with thoughtful support along the way.

Your journey begins in León, where Roman walls, lively plazas and a soaring Gothic cathedral set the stage for the road ahead. From there, you ride west on or near the traditional pilgrimage path, following a rewarding mix of paved roads, compact gravel and occasional classic Camino trail sections through the green hills and quiet villages of Galicia.

Along the way, visit the Knights Templar castle in Ponferrada, pause beside centuries-old churches and chapels, and follow the small Camino markers that have guided generations of travelers toward Santiago. Some stretches feel peaceful and reflective. Others bring the satisfaction of a good climb or a sweeping descent, always with route options and van support nearby when you want them.

Your journey ends in Santiago de Compostela, where the spires of the great cathedral rise ahead as they have for generations of pilgrims. Arriving here by bike is deeply moving — a finish that stays with you long after the ride is over.

Welcome to León, one of northern Spain’s great historic cities and a beautiful place to begin your Camino journey.

After meeting your leaders and fellow travelers, head out on a guided city tour through León’s ancient streets. This was once the Roman capital of northwest Spain, and you can still see traces of its 4th-century Roman walls as you wander through town. You’ll also have time to admire the Romanesque Basilica of San Isidoro and León’s magnificent 13th-century Gothic cathedral, considered one of the most beautiful in Spain.

This evening, gather for dinner and ease into the rhythm of the Camino together.
Accommodation: NH Collection Leon Plaza Mayor, Leon

Today’s ride brings you deeper into the landscapes and stories of the Camino.

After a transfer from the hotel to Cruz de Ferro, you continue toward Ponferrada, where the impressive Knights Templar castle hints at the region’s medieval past. From there, ride on toward Villafranca del Bierzo, a handsome Camino town tucked among narrow terraces above the plain.

Take time to explore the beautiful Plaza Mayor and the romantic church of Villafranca del Bierzo. You’ll feel the character of the route shifting here, as the architecture, landscape and culture begin to carry you toward Galicia.

Your day begins with a ride to Las Herrerías, where the Camino gives you a few ways to shape your ride. You can take the support van to the top of the climb, follow the traditional Camino route on a steep 8.5-mile uphill section or choose a longer, smoother route with a gentler grade. However you get there, the reward is a visit to the Pilgrim’s Monument and a wonderful downhill ride toward Samos.

In Samos, visit the handsome 6th-century Benedictine monastery before continuing through the green Galician countryside. From here on, the route is marked by mojones, the small roadside Camino pillars that guide pilgrims all the way to Santiago.

Dinner is together tonight in the small town of Samos.

Pedal through the pretty Miño Valley, passing small villages, stone chapels and peaceful rural views along the way. The ride leads you into Portomarín, a welcoming Camino town above the river with a fascinating history and a relaxed village feel.

There’s time to wander, visit local churches and chapels, and perhaps treat yourself to a slice of Torta de Santiago, the traditional almond cake found throughout this part of Spain. Dinner and overnight are in Portomarín.
Accommodation: Casa Santa Marina, Portomarin
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

You’ll pass through well-kept Camino villages such as Leboreiro and Furelos, where stone bridges, quiet lanes and simple chapels give the day a wonderfully timeless feel. In Morgade, stop at the local aldea to leave the customary note, a small Camino tradition that invites you to reflect on what this historic pilgrimage route means to you.

Melide is a great place for lunch and is especially known for its octopus dishes. Later, continue to Arzúa, where you can visit the Iglesia de Santiago before gathering for dinner.

Your final biking day is one to remember.

Follow a beautiful and historic route toward Santiago de Compostela, sharing the road and pathways with the spirit of centuries of pilgrims. Before reaching the city, pause near Lavacolla, where pilgrims traditionally washed before completing their journey. Then climb toward Monte do Gozo, where you may catch your first glimpse of the towers of Santiago de Compostela.

Arriving by bike is a powerful moment. In Santiago, explore the historic Plaza del Obradoiro and the famous Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, built on the site where St. James’ tomb was discovered in 813 A.D. You’ll also enjoy a guided cathedral rooftop tour, with sweeping views across the old city. Tonight, celebrate the journey with dinner in Santiago.

Frequently Asked Questions

We know you might have a few questions before you book. Our frequently asked questions cover everything you need to know to feel ready for the ride.

On the first day of the tour, please meet at NH Collection Leon Plaza Mayor at 2:00pm. You're welcome to book your pre-tour stay at this hotel directly or any other hotel in Lisbon, though you'll need to make your own way to the NH Collection Leon Plaza Mayor by the designated time.

Your tour ends with a drop-off at Santiago Airport at 10am, or we can leave you at the Parador de Santiago after breakfast if you're staying longer. Taxis are easily arranged from the hotel to the airport or train station.

Arrival: We recommend arriving in Leon before 1pm. Many guests like to arrive a day or two early to accommodate potential flight delays and/or explore the city before the tour begins.

Departure: Flying out on the last day, we recommend departing from Santiago after 1pm.

You'll stay in a wonderful range of carefully selected accommodations throughout northern Spain-from elegant historic paradors to charming boutique hotels and family-run guesthouses. Each property is chosen for its character, comfort, and connection to the Camino experience. Expect welcoming rooms, authentic regional hospitality, and locations that let you soak in the culture and history of this legendary route.

The Camino Francés offers a wonderful mix of dedicated pilgrim paths, quiet country roads, and packed gravel trails through the heart of northern Spain. The terrain is varied — long, flat stretches across the wide-open meseta give way to rolling hills as you enter Galicia, with a few rewarding climbs before the final descent into Santiago.

Daily distances are manageable, and the route is well-marked throughout, with waymarker shells and roadside cairns guiding you west every mile of the way. Van support is always on hand if you'd prefer to sit out a stretch — and when the spires of Santiago's great cathedral finally rise into view, it's a moment of quiet pride that stays with you long after the ride is done.
