VIEW DATES

Explore PEI by bike on a relaxed 6-day tour. Coastal views, lighthouses, seafood stops, and charming villages with supportive daily planning.

Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) is affectionately known as The Million Acre Farm, and these routes have you cycling through a riot of color: verdant pastures that stretch out to scarlet cliffs, which drop into azure waters.

Experience one of Canada’s national treasures: its tiniest province. Known to many as the setting for Anne of Green Gables, this island is made for touring. You experience red sandstone cliffs, scenic fishing villages and towering sand dunes as you cycle the island from one side to the other.

You spend every night at a fabulous country inn and feast on Prince Edward Island’s famously fresh foods: potatoes, strawberries and — of course — lots of seafood. You taste the very best that the island has to offer, and that’s saying something.

This cycling tour starts in Mill River and winds its way through Malpeque Bay and past the Bay of St. Lawrence, to the most easterly point of the island. On the way, you pass through lovely villages, including Cavendish, North Rustico, Brackley Beach and Stanhope. The tour is designed to appeal to all levels of cyclists. P.E.I.’s highest point is only 400 feet above sea level — beginners don’t have to worry about being unprepared, but there’s still plenty to challenge more experienced cyclists.

Read about each day of the itinerary and check out the map below for the picturesque route you'll take on this tour.

Today we'll meet and quickly head outbound from Halifax to Mill River, Prince Edward Island, with a quick stop in Charlottetown for a pick-up at Great George Hotel at 1pm. Once in Mill River we'll head to Mills River Resort around 3pm where you are fitted for your bike, and you’re soon off on a peaceful afternoon jaunt. This lovely ride is delightful and the start of a glorious week touring a gentle countryside that touches your heart often. You arrive at your inn early today, and you have ample opportunity to settle in before the welcome dinner.

Today’s bicycle ride flows along the rolling farmlands and picturesque fishing villages of Prince Edward Island’s North Cape Coastal drive — home to some of the island’s largest potato farms. The humble potato loves the island’s rich, red clay soil, so you see verdant potato farms everywhere. But also keep an eye out for oyster and mussel fishermen and women working in the island’s rivers and estuaries. Prince Edward Island may be the smallest province in the world’s second largest country, but its bounty from land and sea is both famous and prized throughout the culinary world, from New York to Tokyo.

The blue slate of water will be punctuated with colorful fishing boats with crews busy catching your dinner for the evening. Your destination is Cavendish — a humble hamlet of less than 100 souls — that inspires pilgrimages throughout the world, especially among the Japanese, because it’s the home of Lucy Maud Montgomery and her famous red-haired heroine, Anne of Green Gables. After your ride, a swim is in order: The beaches here are washed by the Gulf Stream, and the water is refreshing. Another delicious dinner is your reward for the day’s pedal.

FAQs

We know you might have a few questions before you book. Our Frequently Asked Questions cover useful information to help you feel ready for the ride.

On the first morning of the tour, our first two pick-up locations are Westin Nova Scotian Hotel at 9am or the Halifax Airport at 9:30am, in front of the Alt Hotel. We'll then drive to Charlottetown, with a pick-up at Great George Hotel at 1:00 pm, and we'll arrive at Mills River Resort at 3:00pm for those meeting us there. You are welcome to book your pre-tour stay at either hotel directly or any other hotel in Halifax or Charlottetown, though you must make your own way to the four pick-up locations at the pre-designated times.

Your tour ends with a drop-off at either the Halifax Airport at 6:30pm in time for flights below.

Arrival: We recommend arriving in Halifax before 8am. Many guests like to arrive a day or two early to accommodate potential flight delays and/or explore the city prior to your tour start.

Departure: Flying out on the last day of the tour, we recommend departing from Halifax after 9:00pm. Earlier flight times will require a separate transfer booked at your own expense.

You’ll be fully supported throughout the tour with two experienced tour leaders — one riding alongside the group and another following in a support vehicle. The support van travels with you on all riding days, stocked with snacks and tools, and ready to help with repairs or provide a lift whenever needed.

Your tour leaders are there for more than just the cycling. They’re happy to assist with logistics, help arrange transport, and share local insights and recommendations to help you make the most of each stop along the way.

You’ll need a solid level of fitness for this tour. By far the best way to get in shape for riding a bicycle is by riding a bicycle! Build up gradually by riding more each time and be regular in your schedule. Practice using the low (easiest pedalling) gears on your bicycle and keep your legs moving quickly (a pace of 70-90 rpm is recommended). This is called “spinning,” and it takes much of the pressure off your knees, while still being the best exercise for conditioning and strengthening. Stationary bikes, rowing machines, NordicTrack-type exercisers, aerobics, and jogging are all excellent ways to get in condition as well. And don’t forget to stretch before and after your workouts.
