Trip Overview

The Hudson River Valley of New York was named as one of the top 20 must-see destinations in the world by "National Geographic Traveler."

The beautiful Hudson River wends its way past small riverside villages, exquisite horse farms, wineries, and apple orchards and then carves a path past spectacular mountains and deep ravines. These are the awe-inspiring views and the gorgeous quiet vistas that sparked the imaginations of artists of the Hudson River School a century ago. And this scenic rural paradise encouraged the Gilded Age millionaires to lavish their fortunes on creating magnificent estates along the banks of the river.

You ride peaceful roads and bike paths enjoying spectacular views, exploring woodlands and farms, and visiting the many small villages that make the area so special. Much of the riding is on the newly expanded Empire State Trail, including a section of the Dutchess Rail Trail on a bridge high over the Hudson.

Enjoy a wine tasting featuring local vineyards and a visit to some of the oldest buildings in America that still line Huguenot Street in the college town of New Paltz. Gentle riding takes you through the farmland and horse country that becomes the foothills of the spectacular Shawangunk Mountains. And, as always, we offer the more energetic riders scenic and longer options.

Itinerary

From start to finish, check out the route.

DAY 1 - Arrival Day
Distance: 20 miles | Terrain: Easier to Intermediate | The 1850 House
The tour begins by meeting in Lloyd, NY, and doing a ride on one of the most spectacular bicycle and pedestrian bridges in the U.S. We offer to pick you up at the Poughkeepsie train station, or you can drive your car to the start of the cycling. Your ride takes you from a rural park onto the 1.5-mile Walkway Over the Hudson. You continue onto the Dutchess County Rail Trail section of the Empire State Trail, then return over the bridge again. After the ride, return to your car or our van. Then proceed to the hotel for the weekend. Dinner is together tonight at the inn.
DAY 2 - Rail Trail & Culinary Institute
Distance: 20 or 30 miles | Terrain: Easier to Intermediate | The 1850 House
Today's ride takes you from the historic Rosendale Trestle and into the college town of New Paltz. The local rail trail continues south of town into horse farms and apple orchard country. Returning to New Paltz, you can stop and enjoy lunch and explore the town's shops. After lunch, take another trail out of town called River to Ridge Trail. This trail is on land conserved by the Open Space Institute and is on some of the historic Shawangunk Ridge carriage trails — and offers spectacular views of the ridge. You return to the 1850 House via the Empire State Trail. Tonight's dinner is a memorable experience at the Culinary Institute of America or (on select dates) the historic Hutton Brickyards, which is set on 73 lush acres beside the Hudson River where you will learn the rich history of the brickyard and how it started in the early 1800s to became one of the largest brick-making regions in the world. All while enjoying a private 5-course meal along the Hudson River Valley.
DAY 3 - Departure Day
Distance: 22 or 30 miles | Terrain: Easier
Today’s ride takes you north from the Rosendale Trestle to the historic waterfront in Kingston. You ride a newer section of the Empire State Trail into the brand-new Sojourner Truth State Park, where you have a nice view of the Hudson. Returning to the waterfront, you have a final lunch or brunch together before shuttling back to the hotel for farewells.
