This Bike Tour celebrates the best of all things that makes Vermont so special. The cycling is superb. We enjoy spectacular vistas of the Green and Adirondack Mountains, cycle through lush rolling farmland, past Vermont's finest apple orchards, and along the handsome shores of Lake Champlain.
We crisscross the Otter Creek on several covered bridges, visit the famous Morgan Horse Farm, cycle through the lovely Middlebury College campus, and take a tour of the Otter Creek microbrewery. Our ride takes us along the shores of Lake Dunmore, where we often picnic on Branbury State Park. We explore the village of Brandon with its imaculate tree-shaded streets and eclectic mix of 19th-century Federal, Greek Revival, and Victorian homes. And we ride to Proctor to view the fascinating exhibits at the Vermont Marble Museum and take an easy side trip to visit Wilson Castle. For the more energetic, there is an end-of-day optional ride up to spectacular Brandon Gap.
This tour also features three very special and very different inns. The Shoreham Inn is a Vermont classic that was once a stagecoach stop dating back to the 1790s. It has been beautifully restored and brims over with warmth, hospitality, the aroma of good home cooking, and the comfortable aura of earlier times. The Waybury Inn was once frequented by Robert Frost (and, more recently, featured on the Bob Newhart Show), and entices us with rustic ceiling beams, excellent cuisine, and comfortable rooms. Our last two nights we stay at the "country elegant" Lilac Inn, a restored Greek Revival mansion that is now on the National Historic Register and enjoys a fine reputation.
